The Humbuckin’ Pickups' latest single, "How the Other Half Live," is a powerful narrative that captures the raw reality of Australia's ongoing social and housing crisis. Inspired by frontman Ewan Cloonan’s firsthand observations of people living in vans, cars, and tents due to necessity rather than choice, the song delivers an unfiltered glimpse into this hidden side of modern life. Cloonan’s journey across Australia in 2023 led him to witness the struggles of those lacking stable housing, mental health support, or social assistance, deepening his drive to address these issues in his music.

In "How the Other Half Live," The Humbuckin’ Pickups take a well-known phrase and twist it to reveal a much harsher truth, focusing on the spaces many don’t see or choose to overlook, like makeshift homes under bridges, in crowded caravan parks, and in roadside campgrounds. The single captures both empathy and stark realism, shedding light on what is often left in the shadows.

Adding to the song’s depth is the virtuosic mandolin playing of long-time collaborator, Vinny Russell (aka Rufous Whistler) and production work of Shane Nicholson, whose multi-instrumental talents bring a fresh layer to the band’s traditionally acoustic sound with drums and delicate electric guitar. "How the Other Half Live" serves as a musical reminder of the urgent need for societal support and awareness.
